Household or Industrial Robot: Choosing the Right One for Your Use

The word robot covers very different realities depending on whether we are talking about an autonomous vacuum cleaner or an articulated arm on a production line. Before looking for a machine, it is worth clarifying what sets these two families apart.

Precision and repeatability

An industrial robot is designed to repeat the same movement thousands of times with a precision on the order of a tenth of a millimetre, or even less. This requirement justifies a high price and a sturdy build, designed to run continuously for years. A household robot does not have these constraints. Its mechanics favour cost and ease of use over absolute precision.

Operating environment

Industrial robots are generally designed for a controlled environment: a workshop, an enclosed production cell, sometimes with strict safety standards requiring physical barriers. Household robots, on the other hand, have to deal with a changing environment, unexpected obstacles, uneven floors or pets, which requires more sensors and onboard intelligence for obstacle avoidance.

Entry and maintenance cost

A used industrial robotic arm can cost from a few thousand to several tens of thousands of francs depending on payload and brand, not counting integration and specialised maintenance. A household robot is most often in a range of a few hundred francs, with maintenance the user can handle themselves in most cases.

The right choice for the project

For personal use, education, or a small prototyping project, a household robot or an educational platform is largely sufficient and costs much less to buy and maintain. For professional use requiring repeatability on precise tasks, it is better to look at industrial robots, including used ones, where the second-hand market often provides access to reliable equipment at a reduced cost compared to new.

In both cases, the first question to ask is not the technology but the real need: what task needs to be automated, how often, and with what acceptable margin of error. That answer then points towards one family of robots or the other.
